One thing I have learned how to do really well is to go with the flow.

My whole life it felt like at any moment things could change.  As a child I didn’t have much control over what was going on.  Which is how children’s lives typically are.

When I was three years old we packed up and moved to san Pablo California for a year.  my dad’s job took him there.  I remember the house we lived in, and I also remember getting an underdog watch.  I still have it, and it still works!  Went to preschool there for a year, then bam, moved back home.

We remained home until just before 6th grade.  Then my parents told my brother and I that we had to get rid of all of our pets and that we were moving to Alaska.  ummmm, what?  Alaska?  yep, Alaska.  the worst part of that was having to give up all my animals that I loved.  It was one of those things I’ll never forget.

Growing up with a volunteer firefighter father made my brother and I be a little more independent and self reliant then other kids.  There were many times that my brother and I would be out playing in the backyard and the siren at the station would go off.  Fire call!  My dad, who was in the house, would grab his bunker gear and run over to the fire station, forgetting that he was supposed to be watching us.  My brother and I would just look at each other and say, ‘I guess dad has a fire call.’  Sometimes mom would come home and when she figured out dad wasn’t home she was not happy.

When you are a parent, things can change any moment.  Like the time I was taking my son over to my mom’s so that my ex and I could have a night out and on my way there my son proceeded to projectile vomit just as I was pulling into my moms driveway…night was canceled.

Or how about over three weekends ago when I was having fun at band practice and my sons life was changed by breaking his leg.  A week at my parents house and then two weeks of having my mom come over during the day to watch him like when he was 3 and me taking care of him at night after having to work my crazy schedule.  He’s doing much better now, but he’s still not 100%.

My job is another area in my life where I have to be able to go with the flow since anything can happen at anytime.  My job is extremely unpredictable and extremely chaotic.  One minute I’m doing grant accounting and the next I’m responding to a hazardous material call.  You just never know how the day is going to go…wait, let’s not forget that nighttime can be a little crazy too!!

I’ve learned a long time ago that I need to just let things unfold as they are supposed to.  And I need to remember that every day things happen for a reason, and it all happens exactly how its supposed to.  If I just keep remembering that then life should go pretty dang smoothly.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not always perfect when it comes to going with the flow.  I sometimes like to push things, and be impatient as hell, which is probably why I’m still single, and probably why I’m not currently living in Tuscany writing my famous sitcom…ok, maybe that last one is a little bit of a stretch.
